Survey of Causes of Blindness among the Students of Seoul Blind School

Abstract

|
We visited Seoul Blind School recently and analysed statistically the causes of blindness among 242 students, 484 eyes.
Most frequent causes of blindness were unkown(30.6%), congenital(26.5%) and others (18.2%). Other causes were ass follows in descending order of frequency; trauma(7.4%), glaucoma(7.0%), infection(4.6%), tumor(2.9%), amblyopia order of frequency;

The causative diseases of blindness were phthisis bulbi(17.4%), optic atrophy(15.3%), retinal degeneration(13.8%), aphakia(11.8%), corneal opacity (8.5%), congenital glaucoma(8.3%) and congenital cataract(5.8%), etc.
comparisons with other statistics on causes of blindness in domestic reports are attempted. Evaluation of results and problems establishing a more detailed and nationwide survey in future are briefly discussed in comment.
